Kennedy Mirema & Freddie Odede—Sikukuu
Kennedy Mirema is a Creative Director & Stylist based in Nairobi, Kenya. Born in Kisumu, Kenya his work is shaped by a deep connection to place, culture, and storytelling. Kennedy draws from everyday life, history, and the evolving energy of African fashion to create visual narratives that feel both personal and intentional. His approach is grounded in research and collaboration, often working closely with designers, photographers, and artisans to craft work that explores identity, memory, and the politics of style. Whether it’s an editorial, a campaign, or a concept-driven story, he’s interested in pushing how fashion can communicate—not just look good, but say something. Right now, he’s focused on expanding his practice across the continent, telling stories that reflect where he’s from,
but speak to the world.
Freddie Odede is a fashion editorial photographer and filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. From a young age, the camera became my way of seeing and sharing the world. My work is driven by a desire to document stories that often go unseen, offering a fresh perspective on Africa beyond the usual narratives. My passion for fashion and culture comes from a need to reshape representation. I realized that no one was documenting fashion through a truly local perspective, so I set out to change that. Inspiration is endless in the rich and diverse cultures around me, and I strive to showcase their beauty and depth through my work.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Sikukuu captures a timeless Christmas tradition in Ahero, western Kenya. Three children, dressed in their finest, stand proudly in front of a local shop— an image rooted in the joyful rituals of the holiday season. Growing up in Kisumu, Kenya, this moment was everything: the excitement of heading to markets, fresh hairstyles, and brand-new clothes. It wasn’t about luxury—it was pride and presence. Colours were bold, spirits high, and there was always this unspoken runway energy as people strolled through the village or gathered at church. Through this image, I reflect on childhood, celebration, and the style codes that shaped our cultural memory. Sikukuu is a Swahili word that means ‘a special day’.
